Maldives has awarded its second mobile licence

The Telecommunications Authority of Maldives (TAM) has awarded the second mobile telecommunications licence to Wataniya Telecom Maldives Private Limited The company was selected based on the report of the Evaluation Committee constituted by the President. The invitation to bid was announced on 10 August 2004. Four companies responded and submitted bids by the deadline. They were Telecom Malaysia International, Syriatel Mobile Telecom S.A, Wataniya Telecom, and Bharti Consortium. more »

World Science Day 2004 - Certificates and Prizes have been Awarded to the Winners of the Science Quiz
 
  Certificate Awarding Ceremony at MCST.

A ceremony to award certificates and prizes to the winners of the Science Quiz was held in the Ministry of Communication, Science and technology. The science Quiz was organized by Ministry of Communication, Science and technology and Maldives UNESCO National Commission in association with the Voice of Maldives. Certificate to the winner of the quiz was given by the Minister of Communication, Science and Technology Honorable Midhath Hilmy. Other certificates and prizes were handed to the respective participants by the Director General of Voice of Maldives, Mr. Badhuru naseer.

 
Celebrating World Science Day
We are celebrating the World Science Day today, 10 November 2004.
 
The objectives of marking the World Science day is to:

a) Review national commitment to science for peace and development.

b) Stress the responsible use of science for the benefit of society

c) Raise public awareness of the importance of science to bridge the gap between science and society

d) Mobilize active involvement of partners to strengthen the impact.

Voice of Maldives will conduct a nation-wide special quiz program to mark the World Science Day. The program will be conducted this evening. MCST will distribute cash prices to the winners of the quiz program. Cash prices will be awarded to the winners at a special ceremony to be held at MCST. Date and time for this ceremony will be announced later.

Mr. Mohamed Amir Appointed as Chief Executive of
Telecommunications Authority of Maldives (TAM)
Mr. Mohamed Amir has been appointed as Chief Executive of the recently established Telecommunications Authority of Maldives (TAM).

Prior to his appointment as Chief Executive of TAM, Mr. Amir has served both the Post and Telecommunication Section of the Ministry of Communication, Science and Technology and TAM as Assistant Director General. more »

Arun Shourie, Minister of Disinvestment, Communications and Information Technology. The Hon. Completion of the Draft Proposal for the National Research Foundation(NRF)
The draft proposal for the creation of the NRF has been completed and is now posted on this website.

Preparation of an S&T Masterplan summary in Dhivehi
The work of preparing a summary of the S&T Masterplan in Dhivehi has been completed and will soon be made available to the public.

Academic Resource Material
The MCST has already procured some materials which will soon be made available to the schools. Funding for the procurement of these materials was provided by UNESCO. Distribution of these materials will begin as soon as the necessary protocols and procedures for the hiring and distribution of the materials are established. In the distribution of the materials, priority will be given to the underprivileged schools, with least access to such materials

Urgent need to develop our R&D capacity
MCST has selected the creation of the National Research Foundation as the priority program for the current year. The Government of Maldives has in principle approved the creation of the NRF. MCST is presently seeking seed money to establish mechanisms to create the Foundation.
