SMILES project website launched

The website for SMILES (Strengthening Maldivian Initiatives for a Long-term Energy Strategy) has been launched. The address of the website is www.mcst.gov.mv/projects/smiles
The SMILES project, launched on 5th May 2004, aimed at supporting the Maldivian government initiatives to formulate and implement a sustainable energy policy through both demand side and supply side management strategies. With co-funding from the European Commission under the Asia Pro Eco Programme, this project can be considered a local contribution to the mitigation of global warming.
The Government of the Maldives has mandated its Ministry of Communication, Science and Technology to formulate and implement energy policy that would help to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.
Specific targets of this project include increasing the efficiency of energy generation and its utilization in the power sector, lowering the import rate of fossil fuels by exploiting renewable energies, and improving efficiency of the transport sector.
European know-how and expertise will be shared with the Maldives to adopt policies and strategies for lowering its rapid growth in fossil fuel demand while ensuring energy access to more remote and less economically advantaged islands. The MCST will interact with stakeholders such as the national power utility, island communities and other line ministries in order to increase the efficiency of energy generation and utilization in the power sector, and to lower the import rate of fossil fuels through greater exploitation of renewable energies and improved efficiency of the transportation sector.
