Maldives and india sign Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in Information Technology


September 08, 2003: The Government of the Republic of Maldives and the Government of the Republic of India signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Cooperation in Information Technology. The MOU was signed on behalf of the Government of Maldives by H.E. Midhath Hilmy, Minister of Communication, Science and Technology and on behalf of the Government of the Republic of India by H. E. Arun Shourie, Minister of Disinvestment, Communications and Information Technology. The signing of the MOU between the two countries which have traditionally enjoyed close and friendly relations, demonstrates yet again, the determination and good will that exist between Maldives and India, to maintain and strengthen this unique friendship.

The MOU covers broad areas of cooperation, including; a) human resource development and training in IT, b) Assistance in the formulation of legal instruments (including cyber laws) and capacity building necessary to support the information age, c) Assistance in the implementation of Thaana script and speech in IT applications and, d) electronic governance.

Under the MOU, both countries will explore possibilities for investments, joint ventures, joint initiatives, technology development and markets in IT sector. The MOU will also facilitate visits and exchange of experts, developing skills through exchange programs and joint sponsorship of conferences, seminars and training programs.
