Hon. Midhath Hilmy calls on Indian Minister of
State for Non-Conventional Energy Sources
September 09, 2003: During the recently concluded
official visit to India, Hon. Midhath Hilmy called on H. E.
Mr. M. Kannappan, Minister of for Non-Conventional Energy
Sources, at his office in New Delhi. The Hon. Minister expressed
his sincere appreciation for warm reception and hospitality
extended to him and his delegates.
The Ministers discussed ways and means of
enhancing the existing cooperation between Maldives and India,
particularly in field of renewable energy. Hon. Midhath Hilmy
briefed the H.E. M. Kannappan on the vulnerability and susceptibility
of Maldives to global warming arising from environmental degradation,
and its concern for the protection of the environment. The
Hon. Minister stressed the importance the Government of Maldives
attaches to the promotion and adoption of renewable energy,
as a means of mitigating the impact of conventional energy
on the global environment.
Hon. Midhath Hilmy applauded the policy of
the Indian Government to develop renewable energy technology
and its policy of implementing renewable energy programs in
India.
H. E. M. Kannappan offered to provide Maldives
Indian assistance and expertise towards surveys, technology
transfers in the area of renewable energy and requested to
send some of MCST’s staff to acquaint themselves with
the renewable energy development programmes being implemented
in India and to establish linkages between the experts on
both sides.
